Wires

Wires
digital photograph, 2018

Shot a couple of weeks ago in Blue Island, IL. Sometimes it's fun to go to an everyday place and see if you can come up with something interesting while just doing straightforward shooting. I'm kind of proud of this one.

digital photograph, 2018

Along with iPhoeography, I've been really enjoying a somewhat more straightforward approach to photography this summer. Collage has definitely taken a back seat in my creative work. This is a recent photo, shot last Thursday, post-processed yesterday and today. There's a deceptive amount of manipulation in a mostly normal looking photo like this. To compare, here's the original, straight from the camera with no adjustments:

Chinatown Sign

Chinatown Sign (manipulated)

I did a little shooting in Chinatown last week. It was mainly an excuse to get out of the house, I had a cold coming on (which has turned out to be particularly nasty) and knew I would likely be cooped up at home for a few days.
I shot this photo at the Chinatown Mall. The original version has pretty minimal processing. Thinking it needed something, I ran the photo through an online glitch processor several times, and started combining and editing several glitched versions on top of the original. The bottom photo is the result. A little overdone, maybe, but I like it.

Here's a few collages I threw together quickly a couple weeks ago. The background images are all photos I shot with an ultra wide-angle lens I bought a few months ago. They were shot for some other things I'm working on, and printed on a low end office laser printer, not a good photo printer, as I like the visual noise the cheap printer adds. The figures are all cut from various exercise books and  manuals, and are leftovers from the Diet And Exercise collage series I've been working on for the past couple of years.
Shooting with an ultra-wide lens often results in odd shifts in perspective, which allowed me to create surreal interactions between the figures and the drab backgrounds. Rotating the figures in unnatural positions seemed to amplify the surreal aspect, and made the perspective seem even odder.
