At Sea

at sea (v.1)
digital collage, 2016

at sea (v.2)
digital collage, 2016

Two versions of a digital collage I made in December, 2016. Never posted them before, as they are more autobiographical than much of my work, and I didn't feel like publicly sharing something that seemed so personal. Time has passed, however, and I'm feeling pretty good overall (even though the school year has just started, which is never the best time for me physically, and sometimes emotionally). While too close to how I was feeling at the time, these pieces now feel like a memory of that time I was feeling kind of shitty about everything.

This is one of those 'I have no idea' pieces, thrown together quickly as a combination of a couple in-progress pieces that were going nowhere and doomed to end up getting deleted.

Three Versions

Nathan Phillips Square (v.1)
2018

Nathan Phillips Square (v.2)
2018

Nathan Phillips Square (v.3)
2018

Here are three different versions of a photo I made when in Toronto recently. It was shot with my ultra-wide angle lens at Nathan Phillips Square, a large plaza in the city center (the curved towers in the background are Toronto city hall).

The color version is the one I did first. While it looks 'natural', there's actually quite a bit of post-processing in this image, beyond the typical color balance and contrast adjustments.  I did the B&W version because I thought this photo would look good in B&W, and I was right. The third one is me playing. I've been pushing myself to play more with photographic manipulation. I do it from time to time, but most of the time the results look too gimmicky and over processed, so I usually don't post them anywhere. This one turned out pretty good, however. While definitely a special effect type of image, it doesn't feel overdone.

Most of the time, when I do different versions of a photo, one of them ends up an obvious favorite for me. I really like all three different versions of this photo, however, and would be hard pressed to choose the one I like the best. Which is your favorite? Leave me a comment and let me know.

This is a version of a panograph I shot a few years ago at Point Reyes National Seashore north of San Fransisco. The original version was color photos, this is B&W photos hand colored on my iPad.

A couple more in the Diet and Exercise collage series I've been working with on and off for a couple of years. More off than on lately, I think March or April was when I last worked on them.

I shot this photo of an acupuncture model in a Chinatown shop window when wandering around San Fransisco on a rainy afternoon a couple of years ago. I used Snapseed to convert it to B&W and do a little cleanup, the hand coloring was done using Procreate. I’ve been exploring hand coloring and adding texture and/or graphic elements to photos using various apps for a while now, this is my most recent one.

Came across this old VW Bug while wandering around in Quebec City. The stern looking building in the background makes it even more picturesque.

Brutalism

Brutalism
digital photograoh
2018

I recently returned from vacationing in Canada. Did quite a bit of shooting while there, and am just starting to go through all my photos and working with them. This is the first one. It's a government building in Quebec City. I have kind of a love/hate relationship with Brutalism, and Quebec City, while justifiably known for it's European beauty, also has a lot of Brutalist buildings scattered around.
